Title: Stonefly nymph
Post by: BlackLabel on April 21, 2009, 08:10:29 PM
Its funny that everyone is talking about fly patterns tonight, just today I did a how to for Chris's blog on my stonefly pattern. http://creekaddict.com/ (http://creekaddict.com/) This stonefly makes a good anchor and kills on high gradient free stone streams that I like to fish. Check it out and let me know what you think.

I bet if you use yellow dubbing with black wire that would be a killer yellow stonefly.

The Kaufman Golden stone dubbing with black wire makes a killer golden stone! ;D

Looks really nice.  Those rubber legs will surely attract some attention. Well tied.

That looks great - what are you using for the wing case? I'm tired of spraying turkey and getting mixed results.

Also, anecdotaly, though it doesn't look as nice, I find that I have a higher catch rate with barred rubber legs as opposed to solid - not certain if it is real or perceived, given the number of variables at play.

Funnily enough, I was seining the Housy last weekend and was amazed at the number of yellow stones that were around - also their size, mostly 10 to 12 with even smaller thrown in. I lost my one remaining yellow stone in a tree that day, so spent last night tying up some - tried loren's patten with hackle, we'll see how it works tonight.

I posted the complete how-to on his fly here.  http://creekaddict.com/?page_id=130 (http://creekaddict.com/?page_id=130)

He's using mottled thin skin for the case.

Nice stone nymph, Nick.  I too have been trying some stone patterns.  Sort of prince nymph in darker colors. Not sure if they are being taken as stone fly nymphs but they are being taken.

TMC 5262 size 8 or 10 is what I tie it on but there is no reason you couldn't tie it bigger or smaller.

Nope. I'll be throwing that up at some point though.  Keep your eyes peeled.

I really love that crazy stone, killer fly I've made a couple of golden and brown variations that are just as deadly. It's now my go to anchor fly next to the vladi worm.

;D  It really doesn't even look like a stonefly like Nick's does. I don't know what it is about that fly, but in the right conditions, the fish go nuts for it!  I'd like to see how the yellow one came out, send me pics if you get a chance.

I think the mixture of the movement from the marabou, the legs, and the antennae, with the addition of the bright ribbing really attracts fish.

When I get home from school I'll send you some pics, it's a bit different than your original crazy stone but it's definatly influenced by it.

So I made the trip out to the Salmon river this weekend. I ended up getting skunked. On Saturday I hooked 4 fish. Two of them were on your stonefly. Sunday I did not touch a fish. Unfortunately I lost all of those stones I tied up.

Its part of the game. Just sucks when you drive four and a half hours one way and not land anything. I also used a pink bead. I wanted it to look like a stone fly sucking on a egg.
