wading boots
« on: July 03, 2009, 02:00:52 PM »
Has anyone heard that next season felt soles will be banned from the farmington?  Just wondering if this is true or not?

Westport Outfitters, Westport CT made such a statement in their newsletter recently.  I did not see it but was told about it.  My guess it is being talked about as a way to stop Didymo, a highly invasive freshwater alga has recently been found in several Northeast trout streams!

It'll happen sometime but I don't think that next season will be the begginning of the new rule.

I just hope someone comes up with a long lasting durable rubbersole boot that I won't kill myself in while I'm walking along rocks.

Yeah I think it is a great idea, anything to help prevent didymo is good, but when I tried a pair of cloudviel vibram soles I had absolutley no traction on the housy.  I wore them once and sent them back to cloudveil the next day.  They refunded my money no problem.  My wife has a pair of the simms vibram soles they seem to have a better grip design.  She still has a lot of problems wading though.

The reason I was asking was because my dad's waders had to be replaced by orvis and the sales rep told us to get the rubber lug soles because next year felt will be banned on the farmington.  I told my dad to get the felt and that we can deal with it when the time comes.  I just figured I would have heard about this on TPO or somewhere on the DEP website.  I am not sure where he got this information.  When the time comes to use the rubber soles I'm going to make sure they are studded this time.  I like the idead of using two pairs one for the housy and one for the farmington but that can get expensive.

I did read Alains post and it was really good.  I'm just glad that cloudviel was very easy to work with in regards to my retuns.

I would contact one of the local fly shops - Dave Goulet especially if he is still in business to find out.  I tried the simms Vibrams in the South Platte which is an easy wading river...they sucked

I talked to Dave yesterday about this.  He said it has been in the works for a few years now.  He said the companies making the rubber boots are using the same rubber that is used for rock climbing.  He said it is actual a pretty good rubber but will load up in the crevices with stones & pebbles rending them useless.  He is taking a wait & see attitude.  One finally thought from dave, he said this is good but won't stop the speard because bottom line is guys don't clean their waders!  ( to paraphrase)

Do people rock climb on wet rocks coated with green slime?  That is the problem!
